Eighth Ward Auxiliary

The role of the Associate Members of Bay District is to assist with Fire Prevention, Fund Raising activities and firefighter fireground rehabilitaion.

The Associate Members are involved in the daily operations of the department by performing duties such as participating in the fireground rehabilitation of firefighters at emergency incidents, performing different administrative duties, performing fund raising, participating in fire prevention and actively serving on various committees.

Our Auxiliary Members (AM) are valuable assets to this department and their actions at times are indispensable. AMs are always welcome at our stations. With that said, the AMs do not always possess the requisite skills and training that Operations Members (OM) possess; therefore, some general guidelines covering the duties of the AM is required.

AMs possess no authority except that granted by policy and/or their status as a member of the Executive Board. Likewise, OMs are not the bosses of AMs. AMs are not devoting their time to wait on or clean behind OMs.

Social functions – The AMs plan and direct all social functions within the guidelines set forth by the Executive Board. The AM appointed to lead the social event speaks for the Chief and Executive Board; therefore, OMs and other AMs should address all questions to the leader of the event. ALL members are highly encouraged to assist in social functions.

Responding to calls – AMs are not OMs. They shall not respond to calls as if they are OMs. EXCEPTION: Structure Fires.

  • If an AM is with an OM in their POV, they may assist at the scene as set forth in this policy.
  • AMs are encouraged to respond to structure fires to support the OMs with rehabilitation, food, and drinks.
  • Children at scenes are not welcome. Department members are responsible for their children.

Assisting at Scenes

  • Fire Scenes – AM support is needed for most structure fire calls. The firefighters require hydration and food during extended fire scenes. The AMs can satisfy this critical need. AMs may also assist in completing the required reports. AMs may assist with gathering equipment. The AMs should devote themselves to assist our firefighters on structure fire scenes.
  • MVA/EMS Scenes – AMs may assist at these scenes; however, their only patient contact will consist of completing any required reports or retrieving equipment/supplies. EXCEPTION: AMs may assist with EMS if and only if they possess the required training offered by the Department and certifying agencies. AMs may assist with gathering equipment.

Station Activities – AMs are encouraged to assist in station activities, to include assisting AMs with truck checks and placing units back into service.
